Ladies, watch out, there’s a new skincare tool in town! You may have spotted your favorite celebrities, influencers, and YouTubers using the famous Gua Sha tool in their skincare routines. But if you want to learn more about scraping trends, before you start, you’ve come to the right place!
What is Gua Sha?
Gua Sha is a flat tool, made of semi-precious stones, used to massage the face. Although the Gua Sha facial tool has gone mainstream recently, it’s much older than you might think. This modern facial scraping technique is based on a traditional Chinese therapy called scraping. Gua means stroking or pressing, which means redness. According to early practitioners, the redness acquired through scratching prompts the skin to heal on its own. While modern gua sha practice is less intense, it will still leave you with a refined face and other remarkable results!
What are the benefits of scraping? When Gua Sha is used correctly and regularly, you will notice these benefits –
-
Lymphatic Drainage
A slow lymphatic system can lead to puffiness, swollen skin, fatigue, acne and other skin problems. Since lymphatic circulation can only be achieved through muscle movement or massage, using scraping is the best way to increase lymphatic circulation. Read more about lymphatic drainage here.
-
Treats Cystic Acne
A common misconception is that you cannot use Gua Sha on acne. Gua Sha tools help reduce the size of flare-ups, redness, and acne by moving congestion and improving circulation. Remember not to use Gua Sha on broken skin and pustules. To read more about how to treat acne with scraping and facial rollers, click here.
-
Fights Acne Scars
Gua sha brings fresh blood to the surface of the skin to renew skin cells, thereby reducing the visibility of acne scars.
-
Reduce puffiness
Because scraping removes lymph and other fluids from your face, your skin tightens and becomes more defined.
-
Say goodbye to dark circles and dull complexion
Improved blood circulation reduces dark circles and a youthful glow.
-
Soften wrinkles and fine lines
Gua Sha relaxes stiff facial muscles and tissues, thereby smoothing out the signs of aging.
-
Contouring and sculpting the jawline and cheekbones
Continued scraping on the face in the right way will result in a clear jawline and cheekbones. Over time, your face will start to look naturally contoured!
How to find your Gua Sha?
Gua sha comes in a variety of shapes and materials, and each has its own unique purpose. We’ve put together a list of common shapes and materials along with their benefits and uses to help you find the perfect Gua Sha!
Based on material:
This pretty pink is associated with emotion, compassion and love. It is best for smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles, eliminating toxins and negativity present in the body.
This material has the most powerful elements of fire, water and earth to clear the negative thoughts and emotions that may be present in the body. It leaves skin feeling refreshed. It is also responsible for repairing and strengthening muscle tissue over time.
This crystal can remove existing imbalances. It reduces puffiness and promotes lymphatic drainage.
Due to its negative charge, it removes negativity and stress by producing negative ions. It helps to cool the skin and tighten pores.
Based on Shape:
- Concave – The concave side of Gua Sha is best used on a wider area of the body. It sculpts the neck, shoulders and spine.
- Double Curved Edges – If your Gua Sha has this shape, it can promote blood circulation under the eyes, cheeks and cheekbones.
- Rip – Since the split or turf is smaller, it is best to use it exclusively for the chin.
- Teeth edge – Gua sha with this edge can stimulate fine lines and wrinkles. It is used from the chin to the cheeks, temples and forehead.
- Sharp ridges – This part of the scraping is best for scooping the eyebrows.

How to use your Gua Sha?
Here is a picture showing us how to use Gua Sha properly.
- Before starting, wash the scraping tool with water and soap to make sure it is clean. You can even keep it in the fridge for a few hours if you want to give your skin an extra cooling and soothing effect.
- Cleanse your face and apply any serum, facial oil or moisturizer of your choice. Your skin should be smoothed with some product to prevent any irritation from scraping.
- Hold your tool firmly in the correct way. The curved part should fit snugly against the curve of your skin and the flat part should be against your skin.
- Use the wider concave side of the tool first. Start at the bottom of the well-moisturized side of your neck and pull it up toward your chin. Repeat a few times, then do the same thing on the other side of your neck. Then move to the front of your neck and do the same upward movement. Don’t put too much pressure here or you’ll start choking and coughing.
- Next, use the smaller cracks or turf in the scraping, starting from the center of the chin. Scrape along your jawline to the bottom of your ear. Repeat a few times, then do the same on the other side.
- Take the flatter curve of the tool and scrape from the center of the face, massaging the cheeks. You have to do this on several horizontal lines to cover the area.
- Then, use the small rounded end of the tool to massage the area under the eyes, pulling it towards the temples.
- Place the tool on the forehead so that the largest curve is just above and gently pull it towards the hairline.
- Finally, after massaging all parts of the face, complete your skincare routine if desired.
Should you Use Gua Sha over Serum or Oil?
If you are using the scraping tool during the day, it is better to use a serum as it is light. Unlike oils, it doesn’t leave your skin feeling greasy or sticky. Even if that’s our advice, use whatever is more comfortable for your skin – it could be a serum, facial oil, or moisturizer.
The most important thing to remember is to avoid using Gua Sha on bare skin as it can cause rashes and irritation.
How Often do You Shave?
It is recommended to follow the practice of facial scraping at least three times a week to maintain the results. You can choose to do it in the morning to reduce puffiness, or at night before bed to relax your facial muscles.
How to Clean Gua Sha?
It is very important to clean the scraping tools. Dirty tools can cause various skin problems like acne, oiliness, breakouts, etc. To keep your tools clean, we recommend wiping with a soft towel before and after each use. For deeper cleaning, you can dip a towel in some soapy water (water + detergent) and gently wipe the tool. This removes the bacteria that has built up on the stone. Avoid using hot water as it can damage the stones in the tool. Before putting the scraping tool back in the box, make sure it is completely dry.
Since your scraping tool is made of semi-precious stones, it is fragile. Dropping it can damage the crystals in the face tool, altering the results. It is very important to handle your Gua Sha very carefully. You can store tools in a dry place where they won’t fall. You can even store it in the refrigerator (or makeup freezer) for added cooling.
